Documento IB – Identidades en español
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme develops students who are critical thinkers and problem solvers, self-directed learners, more culturally aware, better prepared to be part of the global community and well prepared to meet the demands of college and career.
Identidades en español gives students the tools they need to function and interact in a global and intercultural world. The program is designed to develop learner autonomy as students find their own voices in Spanish and their places in the worldwide community of Spanish speakers.
What does the Diploma Programme offer students?
Depth and breadth of knowledge
Identidades en español spirals content and process to ensure student learning through a sequence of activities that allow immediate application of newly acquired language skills. The combination of tightly sequenced activities and frequent closure ensures that students have the skills they need to complete assignments plus the confidence to apply those skills to novel situations.
Increase understanding of diverse cultures, including one’s own
Explanations of cultural and intercultural products, perspectives and practices, as well as the outstanding integration of Hispanic lexical variants, fosters global awareness and the development of communication skills.
This cultural and intercultural diversity is embedded throughout the program and made explicit in the “Culture” section.
Explore ideas and issues of global importance through different languages
Identidades en español was built to be relevant to older adolescent and young adult learners and includes explorations of global issues through specially designed projects, matched to level and unit context. Through them, students see themselves as both problem solvers and members of the larger community.
Primary characteristics of IB language courses
Cross- cultural understanding is a key overarching objective of the course
Identidades en español presents Hostal Babel, a situation comedy which uses an amusing storyline to help students review the contents of each unit. The series features five characters from different Spanish-speaking countries, thus supporting an intercultural, pan-Hispanic vision.
Students are exposed to a variety of authentic texts and produce products in a variety of communicative contexts
Think in an additional language
Key sections in IB courses and their connections to Identidades en español
The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course is assessed through an oral presentation and a 1,600-word essay. TOK asks students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and how we know what we claim to know.
All units in Identidades en español begin with questions to help students reflect on what they are learning. The inductive work of the section ¿Qué sabes? helps students gain a reflective and analytical understanding of how language works.
Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) is one of the three foundational elements that all students must complete as part of the IB Program
The three areas of CAS, which are usually interrelated with specific activities, are characterized as follows:
Creativity: The arts and other experiences that involve creative thinking.
Identidades en español encourages students to be creative with language, incorporating language variants and engaging activities in each unit. Additionally, our ELEteca platform contains a wealth of interactive activities that gives students the opportunity to learn where and when they want.
Service: A voluntary, unpaid exchange in which students learn while respecting the rights, dignity and autonomy of all the people involved.
Edinumen places a high value on including values and social justice in all of its programs, and Identidades en español is no exception. Throughout the program, tasks are designed to help students go beyond learning Spanish and include ethical and social components.
Additionally, activities use a variety of grouping configurations that help students develop the skills they need to work within their communities. Finally, each level includes projects that contain a community service component that respects both students and the communities they choose to serve.
