Savia is a symbol of energy and life. It is the substance that provides plants with the nutrients they need. Thanks to savia, the plant grows, bears fruit, and renews itself.

We have named our new Español de Herencia series from SM-Edinumen USA Savia because it aims to nourish each student’s knowledge and support their academic growth.

The Savia project has been one of the most widely used programs for the formal development of language among students of Hispanic origin around the world—successfully implemented with over ten million students in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Colombia, Spain, and more. It has now been adapted to meet the needs of heritage learners in the U.S. by a team of experts with extensive experience in the field, under the coordination of Edinumen USA.

We are confident that the Savia series will provide an invaluable space for student learning and growth. We hope it becomes a powerful tool in their educational journey.

Apertura

Each chapter begins with a photo accompanied by questions that encourage exploration and analysis. There's also a guiding question related to the words from the Vocabulary Workbook. These key words appear in blue throughout the book. Additionally, the chapter introduces a core value that will be explored. This opening section is designed to motivate students to recall prior knowledge and reflect on what they will learn.

Teoría literaria

This section presents the characteristics and definitions of various literary genres. It also explains how to study key aspects of literary analysis, such as the author’s intent, text structure, cultural elements, literary devices, and more.

Lectura

This section features literary texts connected to the chapter’s core value and main theme. It includes selected works by renowned international authors, along with an interesting fact about each one. Every text is accompanied by comprehension and analysis questions. Words that may be unfamiliar are highlighted in yellow and defined in the margins.

Después de leer

This three-page section offers activities that develop and reinforce reading comprehension skills while stimulating critical thinking. It begins with a vocabulary activity based on the readings, followed by general comprehension tasks. The third page includes an activity that explores the chapter’s core value and another that refers students—via highlighted blue words—to the Vocabulary Workbook.

Comprensión lectora

This section consists of three stages. The first, titled "Leo," presents a short text and an exploration activity. Next is "Aprendo", which defines and explains a specific reading comprehension skill, such as distinguishing facts from opinions or identifying the type of narrator. Finally, "Comprendo" includes an activity to apply the skill learned.

Estudio de la lengua

The language study is divided into three sections: Vocabulary, which reinforces skills to expand students’ lexical knowledge; Grammar, which focuses on the formal aspects of the language; and Spelling, which teaches orthographic rules and conventions.

Redacción

This section is designed to teach writing techniques for various types of texts. It includes examples, definitions, and step-by-step guidance to help students follow a clear structure. Then, students apply what they've learned through a writing activity. At the end, there is a task specifically intended for oral expression.

Repaso

This two-page spread reviews the most important skills and concepts from the chapter. The final activity is an assessment that measures the student’s attitude toward the value emphasized at the beginning of the chapter. A callout at the bottom directs students to the Workbook for additional practice.

Otros tipos de textos

This workshop appears every two chapters. Through the presentation of historical, scientific, and technological texts, among others, it promotes reading comprehension and cross-curricular integration. The workshop is divided into three stages:
First, the student explores their prior knowledge about the topic.
Second, a nonfiction text is presented, followed by comprehension activities.
Finally, students are invited to complete a multidisciplinary project related to the topic.

Repaso

At the end of the book, you'll find recommendations for working on communicative competence activities. These activities are designed to help students practice the necessary skills for different communication situations and to master the four language arts: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Communicative competence activities appear in the “Después de leer” section. Before completing any of these tasks, it is recommended to review the list of tips at the back of the book to ensure successful execution. In addition, each type of activity includes a rubric with clear criteria for evaluating performance.

Cuaderno de vocabulario

A Vocabulary Workbook is also included, allowing students to incorporate new words through a variety of engaging and playful activities. Throughout the sections, students are guided through the different stages of vocabulary acquisition: from visual recognition and pronunciation to understanding meaning, associating words, and using them in context. This promotes meaningful learning that enables students to apply new vocabulary in real communication situations.
